Landscape artist at Mosquito Hill gallery
An exhibit of oil paintings by Pamela Sweet will be featured in the gallery at Mosquito Hill Nature Center from Saturday, Nov. 5 until Friday, Dec. 30.
Sweet, who calls Marinette County her home, is a painter specializing in nature and landscapes done in oil and gouache. She is inspired by the beauty of the woods and waters found right outside her home studio. She lives near Pembine, with 17 named waterfalls in the area.
She is a self-taught artist, although she has taken many courses over the years. After attempting watercolors, she enrolled in drawing classes, where she said everyone needs to start. "It gives you the skills to interpret what you see," says Sweet. She also exposed herself to charcoal and pen and ink, where she worked with shading. She also pays attention to the works of Carl von Marr (February 14, 1858 - July 10, 1936) and Daniel Gerhartz, born in 1965, from Kewaskum, WI.
She then moved on to oil painting and worked in tones and values. Along the way, she has been involved as a volunteer in the Art Aware Program that takes place in schools. Sweet raised a family and returned to painting after her children were out of the house.
Sweet has been painting for 10 years, and now paints daily. She paints plein aire, (in the open air), and has developed a rolling carry case that doubles as a backpack when necessary, and a portable easel
Sweet's framing should also be noted, as she uses eco-friendly materials and embellishes them with gold leaf and guilders paste that comes in many different colors.
The Pamela Sweet exhibit is free and open to the public during regular nature center hours: Tuesday through Friday from 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
