Lunch & Learn features house project
Over the course of about seven years, Mike and Barb Homolka used recycled materials and hand tools to build what they call a fantasy house.
They will talk about the experience on Tuesday, Jan. 10 during the Waupaca Area Public Library's Lunch & Learn program. It will begin at noon with a light lunch.
To make a reservation, call the library at 715-248-4414 or email Library Director Peg Burington at pburingt@mail.owls.lib.wi.us.
The house in northern Waupaca County is called Deer Shelter and has been featured on HGTV's Extreme Homes, TV news and newspapers.
Inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright and Alex Jordan's House on the Rock, it is located on 30 acres.
"It was all kind of to work with nature," Mike Homolka said of their project. "Most of the rooms are probably 90 percent glass."
The best of nature was invited in, including trees, rocks and boulders. The spaces include a triangular hot tub room, with floor to ceiling glass walls and the "Boulder Room" with a pointed glass prow, terraced floor, stone fireplace and giant boulders.
The glass prowed dining room is entered through the floor via a rock counterweighted floor door where one can sit before a fire with an unobstructed view of the surrounding forest.
Even the kitchen is glass and holds a wood cook stove.
The first floor of the tower is the Winter Room with a conversation pit and cozy glass front stove. The second floor of the tower consists of two levels with large triangular built-in bed much like a glass tree house.
The third floor is open but covered, with a large bell in the rafters and built-in table and seating.
Neither Mike or Barb Homolka had any architectural experience when they took on the project.
"I couldn't have done it without Barb," he said. "The two of us were a team."
