Nearly 650 attend Lutefisk Supper
Nearly 650 attended Northland Lutheran Church's 94th Annual Lutefisk Supper and Norwegian Bake and Craft Sale held last Saturday.
The number of attendees were down slightly.
"We've heard from several of the long-time attendees who go to other lutefisk suppers across the state, and they tell us that other churches are no longer hosting their suppers," said William Hahn, council member and supper volunteer. "Many have requested that we continue our supper. They seem to really enjoy our fellowship."
Many families return year after year and host multi-generational gatherings at the supper. A number of the filled tables were due to these gatherings, with several first-timers taking in the sights, sounds and smells. Families traveled as far as Texas and Kansas, while an active duty serviceman came from England.
Attendees arrived 2 ½ hours early just to purchase the Norwegian pastries, crafts and other baked items. Four tables of baked goods and crafts were sold out by the end of the day. The rosettes went first and then the lefse. Out of 500 pounds of lutefisk, only 30 pounds remained.
"We heard so many good things, especially about our volunteers," said Dianne Erickson, council member and head organizer of the supper. "We had so much help this year that everything went very smoothly. They made all the difference."
Since 1908, the Northland Lutheran Church has served members and visitors from its rural location in Northland. The church is affiliated with Lutheran Congregations in Mission for Christ (LCMC). Church services are held every Sunday at 10 am. he church's purpose is "To worship God, spread His word, witness for Christ, welcome all, serve them, and grow the community of believers through the power of the Holy Spirit."
