Nomination papers ready for council races
City residents who want to seek a seat on the Common Council can begin taking out nomination papers on Thursday, Dec. 1.
Twenty signatures are required on the nomination papers, which must be filed at City Hall by 5 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 3.
Up for re-election next April are Chuck Gerlach in the 2nd Ward and Jerry Juve in the 3rd Ward. Incumbents who are not running for re-election must file non-candidacy papers by 5 p.m. Friday, Dec. 23.
The 1st Ward seat on the council is currently vacant. Jack Spierings resigned from his seat in early November after moving into the 2nd Ward.
Spierings was elected to his third term on the Common Council in April of 2010. Mayor Don Morgan can appoint someone to fill Spierings' term until next spring's election.
If someone is appointed to fill the seat until the election and wants to be a candidate in April, that person will also have to take out nomination papers and file them by the Jan. 3 deadline.
The aldermanic positions are for two-year terms.
