Sara Lee contributes $14,000 to schools

Nov. 16, 2011 | 0 comments

Sara Lee New London Facility gave $14,000 in company contributions to the New London Area School District last week.

The money will be divided between four programs that impact students by using positive reinforcement.

The first is the High School Show Choir, the money being applied to equipment costs for the Show Choir Invitational which New London hosts each year.

A second donation goes to the Racing for Education program at the middle/intermediate school. The program reinforces the abilities students can develop if they apply themselves. Racing for Education mentor Tim Nitke says the donation will go toward the purchase of an eight person conversion van with 32,000 miles on the odometer, to be purchased from Bob Ebben. "This van will allow us to transport the team members to Racing for Education competitions when parents are unable to be there," says Nitke.

A third program, Junior Achievement, exists throughout the district in both public and parochial schools at the elementary and middle school levels. The program is designed to foster work-readiness, entrepreneurship and financial literacy skills, and use experiential learning to inspire kids to dream big and reach their potential. Lincoln Elementary Principal Pete Schulz explains that volunteers from our local business community donate their time to teach the lessons to the students.

The fourth program exists in the elementary schools throughout the district to instill early in students the need to be accountable, care for each other and respect each other. The Bulldogs of Character program will receive part of the donations, to be equally divided between 3rd, 4th and fifth graders. This includes both private and public schools, and the money goes to purchase curriculum for the program.

Sara Lee is dedicated to helping communities where their facilities are located, and is happy to give this contribution to the schools in New London.
