Sewer rate to increase

May 23, 2012 | 6 comments

The Common Council approved a 3 percent sewer rate increase when it met on May 15.

For the average homeowner, it will mean an additional cost of $1 a month.

The sewer rate increase is expected to generate an additional $5,000 per month into the city's sewer fund.

Mayor Brian Smith told the council that the city's auditor recommended a sewer rate increase and that it will also help with cash flow in the sewer fund. The sewer budget needs cash flow to reimburse the city's Water Department for money that it borrowed from that department.

Last year's sewer budget expenditures exceeded revenue by about $1,000.

A city study done in 2008 recommended an annual 3 percent sewer rate increase. The last sewer rate increase was a 3 percent increase in December of 2010.

The mayor said the city will make its final debt payment on the sewer plant in 2014.

"We will then look at turning back the clock and giving it back," he said of the sewer rate.

So the mayor recommended that the city collect an extra $60,000 per year.

    This guy is an accountant?

At the end of the year, the council will be "surprised" by a $58,000 surplus in the sewer budget. And, we will find out that $58,000 is exactly what the city needs to pay for a new SUV, or a new HDTV system, or a fact-finding trip to Las Vegas.

    That's more than a 6% increase in 18 months.

    We'll start holding our breath.

  2. I take my comments back. I should have gathered more information before making a post. Perhaps there is more to why the city needs to collect this extra 3%.

    WOW.

I didn't post that comment. Here's what's going on. Somebody has registered an account under the username lastpercentiie (but with a capital "eye" as the second to last letter).

When the username is displayed on the screen, the capital "eye" looks just like a small "L".

It's not me - it's somebody who lacks the intellectual stamina to have an actual discussion, so he's resorted to a childish prank.

I think everyone can distinguish my "real" posts from any impostor posts.

  5. Like I said, anyone can distinguish one from the other.

Note to Robert Cloud: Your comment system wasn't worth the $11.89 you paid for it. I could distinguish my account by changing the avatar - if the system allowed for the avatar to be changed!

Note to prankster: I now have your account number (#35303656). I hope you won't be embarrassed when your identity is posted here.
