WHS presents 'A Midsummer Night's Dream'

Feb. 8, 2012 | 0 comments

A light-hearted comedy with interweaving plots and played by famous characters such as Puck and Bottom characterize the ever-popular "A Midsummer Night's Dream," written by William Shakespeare.

The play will be performed at the Waupaca High School Performing Arts Center at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 17, and Saturday, Feb. 18, and 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 19.

Ticket prices are $7 for adults and $5 for students.

The play is a complex farce that involves two sets of couples whose romantic interests are confused and complicated still further by entering a forest ruled by fairies. The fairy Puck is a major character who is full of mischief and tricks, especially making fun of numskull carpenters who pretend to be dynamic actors.

"This is the first time the all-school play has delved into the Shakespearean realm," director Monica Reeves said. "Working with the material has been challenging and fun, especially since we are modernizing the setting, props and costumes. I have been pleasantly surprised how the students have understood and interpreted the play. Some have read it in their English class, which has been valuable.

"The play, performed by over 25 students, will serve as a nice mid-winter reprieve for the audience," she added. "It's about summer, dreaming and love, all subjects that make us want to drift away from the cold month of February."

General admission tickets can be purchased one week prior to show time at the school office or one hour prior to each show at the door.

The cast includes Theseus, Ian Johnson; Egeus, Parker Kantos; Lysander, Eddie Morey; Oberon, Joe Pegorsch; Titania, Brayden Kendziora;
