Winchester speaker to discuss Nazi art

July 5, 2012 | 0 comments

Dr. Pamela Potter will present "A New Look at Nazi Art" at 6:30 p.m. Monday, July 9, at the Waupaca Area Public Library.

An expert in the relationship between the arts and political ideologies, Potter will explain how Nazi oppression led to new opportunities for artistic expression. She also explores how subsequent German emigration affected American music during the Cold War.

A professor at the Univeristy of Wisconsin-Madison, Potter holds joint affiliation with the School of Music and Department of German and is director of the Mosse/Weinstein Center for Jewish Studies in Madison.

She received a doctorate from Yale University in music history in 1991 and held an Andrew W. Mellon Postdoctoral Fellowship in the Humanities at Stanford University, 1991-92. She is a recipient of the Alfred Einstein Award of the American Musicological Society, and is the author of Most German of the Arts: Musicology and Society from the Weimar Republic to the End of Hitler's Reich.

This program is the first of two Winchester Academy programs examining World War II. On July 16 Dr. Andrew Williams, assistant professor of design history at UW-Stout, presents "World War ll in Myth and Memory."

Sponsored by Rev. Barry and Ruby Shaw, the July 9 program is free and open to the public.
