Building Character through Art Contest on display

CLINTONVILLE – The nIc Foundation currently has on display at First State Bank in Clintonville, the “Building Character Through Art” gallery show featuring winning art submissions for 2007-08 from K-12 students representing the Clintonville, Shawano and Keshena communities. The gallery show is featured in the main lobby of the bank and will be on display through March 23.

The Building Character Through Art contest is open to students in grades K-12 in northeastern Wisconsin. Students submit artwork in one of the positive character traits and values categories selected by the nIc Foundation. The categories for the contest include family/belonging; compassion; generosity/service; freedom/joy; self-worth; integrity; honor; and achievement/success. Students also write a narrative telling about how their character trait or value is portrayed in their artwork.

Currently, the Building Character Through Art contest for 2008-09 opened Dec. 1, 2008, and closed Feb. 27. Judging of the art submissions will be on March 14. Winners will be notified at their respective schools by April 15.

All public and private schools receive information about the contest by Nov. 20. Any student in grades K-12 may enter the contest providing a teacher and a parent sign the contest application form. First-place winners receive a $100 U.S. Savings Bond and a nIc “Just be Nice …” T-shirt; second-place winners receive a $50 U.S. Savings Bond and a portable CD player; and honorable mention winners receive a nIc peace bear. Awards are presented to students in May by Lynn Marcks, CEO of nIc Foundation.

From Clintonville, two winning pieces of artwork are on display. Madelyn Didier’s first-place artwork in the character division of generosity/service and Shelby Keller’s second-place artwork in the character division of compassion are part of the gallery show. From Shawano, the students with artwork on display at Premier Community Bank include Sophia Nowak, honorable mention in the character division of self-worth; Emma Etten, second place in the character division of family/belonging; Maria Keenan, first place in the character division of honor; Raquel Riemer, first place in the character division of freedom/joy; and Julia Beck, honorable mention in the character division of integrity.

Also part of the traveling gallery show are winning pieces of artwork from students representing the areas of Green Bay, Appleton, Omro, Waupaca, Wautoma, Oakfield, Sheboygan and Bonduel. The Building Character Through Art winning submissions travel as a gallery show throughout northeastern Wisconsin.

The nIc Foundation is named in honor and memory of murder victim Nicolas Resch. The foundation promotes peace and nonviolence in our everyday lives. The mission of the nIc Foundation is to encourage the positive character traits of nurturing, integrity and compassion through violence prevention education in northeastern Wisconsin.
