New London man charged after high-speed chase

Sept. 2, 2010 | 0 comments

Juan J. Guitron, 33, New London, was charged Aug. 24 with fleeing an officer, obstructing an officer, a second drunken driving offense, operating after revocation, disorderly conduct and criminal damage to property.

On Aug. 20, New London police received a call that Guitron had broken a car window and threatened to harm himself with a knife. The caller said Guitron had left on his motorcycle and was intoxicated.

New London Police Officer Mike Harlow observed a motorcycle traveling southbound on Shawano Street. He began pursuing the motorcycle, which reportedly reached speeds in excess of 90 mph and ran through a red light at State Highway 54 before crashing at the intersection of Shawano and Washington streets.

Harlow reported that the motorcycle driver, identified as Guitron, then ran away. Harlow drove after Guitron across a baseball field and pulled his car in front of him to block his escape. Harlow attempted to use his Taser to subdue Guitron, but it failed to stun him through his leather jacket.

Guitron continued running until Harlow tackled him, according to the criminal complaint.

Guitron was taken to New London Family Medical Center and then flown by helicopter to Theda Clark Medical Center in Neenah.

Guitron was convicted of a drunken driving offense in January 2007. In May 2007 his license was revoked indefinitely due to noncompliance with a court-ordered drug-and-alcohol assessment.

He was convicted of operating after revocation in July 2007 and March 2008.

Guitron has been charged as a repeat offender and faces two years in prison in addition to the three-year maximum sentence if convicted of fleeing an officer.

He was convicted of battery to an officer, resisting an officer and disorderly conduct on Feb. 2 and placed on three years' probation with 90 days in jail.
