Camper charged with battery, escape
Gary L. Krause, 37, Appleton, was charged with battery, strangulation and escape from custody.
On Sunday, May 27, Deputies Jon Robenhagen and Kevin Michalowski responded to a domestic disturbance reported at a campsite at Wolf River Campground in Mukwa.
As he approached the site, Robenhagen saw a man, identified as Krause, knock down a woman inside the camper.
Robenhagen arrested Krause, handcuffed him and placed him inside the squad car, locking the doors.
The deputies then interviewed witnesses. The woman said Krause punched her, threatened to kill her and started choking her.
The police also found at the campsite two plastic bags with a green leafy substance that they suspected was marijuana.
However, the substance did not test positive for THC, the psychoactive compound in marijuana.
While the officers were interviewing other campers, they heard someone yell that the prisoner had escaped. They ran to the car and found that the window had been rolled down and Krause was gone.
Krause was subsequently arrested. He appeared in court on May 30 and was released from custody on a $5,000 signature bond.
