  1. According to a study done right here in Wisconsin, a driver will drive while drunk 80 to 2000 times - for every time s/he is arrested for drunk driving.

So, these 38 convictions for drunk driving represent 3,000 to 76,000 trips taken by these individuals -- while drunk -- but not "caught" doing it.

Tell us again, how many $10 seatbelt tickets were written last year?

  2. Good point, how many drunk, suspended, or revoked drivers or people with warrants were arrested in the last year which were only stopped for not wearing there seatbelt?

Based on information (not found) in the official reports: ZERO.

  4. Lastpercentile I would love to know what reports your are looking at. I have a family member this happened to this year. So I know it's not zero. But thanks for your point of view.

  5. I'm speaking of the police department's annual report. In it, they emphasize the number of seat belt violation tickets they've written - but they say nothing about secondary charges, subsequent to pulling over a driver for not wearing a seat belt.

I didn't say it never happens, I said the police department says nothing about it. You can probably guess that they don't want to suggest that they might be "trolling" for other offenses, when they pull over a driver not wearing a seat belt.

When you're driving around "drunk, suspended, revoked or with warrants" - getting arrested is not "happening to you". Any more than getting hit by a bus while jaywalking - "happens to you".

Oh Oh, you let the cat out of the bag! Who would have thought that an officer might pull over someone at 2:00 a.m. for a headlight out that might turn into a drunken driver? Or maybe check for warrants after stopping a driver for not wearing their seat belt. I'm sure it never crossed the officer's mind. If you don't want to get pulled over and subject yourself to the "secrets" of the police, try following the law.

Speaking of cats I've heard a few "tales" about local management that crawl off bar stools and into the driver's seat on a pretty regular basis (in front of plenty of witnesses) yet seem to make it home with no problems.
