New London man charged with burglary

Oct. 5, 2011 | 0 comments

In a span of less than two week, a New London man has appeared in court on three separate criminal cases.

David L. Edwards, 43, New London, was initially charged with misdemeanor disorderly conduct on Sept. 20. He was released from custody on a $500 signature bond with the conditions that he not go onto the North Water Street premises where he had been residing at the time of his arrest and not go into the Coppershot Bar.

A short time later, Edwards moved to the Rainbow Motel in New London.

Shortly after 1 a.m. Monday, Sept. 26, New London police were called out to the Rainbow Motel. Ted Guyette, a resident, told officers that he had allowed an unknown man, later identified as Edwards, to stay the prior night in his room because the man had no place to stay, and he felt sorry for him.

When Guyette told Edwards that he had to leave, Edwards allegedly became angry and Guyette called the police.

Officers located Edwards at the Travel Plaza and told him not to go back to Guyette's room or he would be arrested. They also reported finding a pot pipe in his pocket.

At 3:30 a.m., New London police were again called to the Rainbow Motel in response to a fight reported in the parking lot. When they arrived, police found Guyette standing in the southwest corner of the parking lot and Edwards lying in a nearby swamp with two black eyes.

According to the criminal complaint, Guyette told police he had first gone to the Travel Plaza to purchase cigarettes and a lottery ticket. He returned to his apartment and went to sleep. He later woke up and saw Edwards standing over his bed, threatening him. Guyette accused Edwards of punching him and said he fought back in self defense.

Edwards was charged that same day with burglary, misdemeanor battery, criminal trespass and misdemeanor bail jumping. He was released from custody on a $2,000 signature bond with the condition that he have no contact with Guyette other than to pick up his belongings with an office present.

On Sept. 29, New London police were called out to the Rainbow Motel in response to a report that Edwards had returned. When he was arrested, Edwards said he had gone there to retrieve his cell phone charger.

On Sept. 30, Edwards was released from custody on a $2,000 signature bond with the conditions that he have no contact with Guyette, not go onto any premises where Guyette might be present and not go on the premises of the Rainbow Motel.
