New London teens charged with car theft
WAUPACA - Eric D. Doughty, 18, and Zachary J. Peterson, 18, both of New London, were charged with taking a vehicle without the owner's consent.
On the morning of Sept. 9, New London police received a report that a white 1998 Pontiac Sunfire had been stolen. The vehicle had been in the owner's driveway, unlocked with the keys in the car.
Officer Thomas Algiers was searching for the stolen vehicle when he saw Doughty and Peterson walking down the middle of Oshkosh Street. He noticed that the lower part of Peterson's jeans were wet and Doughty, who was wearing shorts, had grass on his shoes and socks.
Since both teens had prior encounters with law enforcement, Algiers asked them if they knew anything about the stolen vehicle. They said they did not know anything about the car.
Later that same day, the stolen car was located on Wieland Road just west of Robe Road in the town of Caledonia. The car had gone into a ditch and hit a tree.
Police again questioned Doughty and Peterson. According to the criminal complaint, the two allegedly finished watching the Packers game, then stole the car for entertainment purposes at approximately 11 p.m., went driving around the countryside and crashed it at 3 a.m.
