Suspect charged in junkyard thefts
Jeffrey J. Douglas, 37, Iola, was charged with misdemeanor theft and felony bail jumping.
Over a seven-month period beginning in mid-April, the Kriewaldt Auto salvage yard in Iola began reporting the ongoing theft of batteries, radiators and other parts from vehicles parked at the site. Items were stolen from an estimated 52 vehicles.
The owner, George Kriewaldt, purchased a deer camera in late August and in mid-September had photos of a suspect that he showed to Iola Police Chief Robert Prahl.
Prahl believed he recognized the man in the photos as Douglas, but could not be certain because the man's face was not clearly visible.
After walking around the property with the police chief, Kriewaldt placed another camera in a tree near the path that appeared to have been used to enter the salvage yard.
On Dec. 5, Kriewaldt brought in more photos. This time they showed the man's face and Prahl recognized him as Douglas, according to the criminal complaint.
Douglas was previously charged with two counts of burglary and two counts of theft. He was released from custody on a $2,000 signature bond on May 31.
