Waupaca man charged with car theft, felony OWI
Patrick Tankersley, 31, Waupaca, was charged with operating a vehicle without the owner's consent, operating a vehicle after revocation and a fourth offense of operating a vehicle while intoxicated.
In the early morning hours of Dec. 18, Waupaca Police Officer Nathan Winistorfer was dispatched to the 500 block of East Fulton Street in response to a car crash.
As the officer was en route to the scene, dispatch informed him that a green Ford Probe had been stolen from outside Paca Pub just minutes earlier.
When Winistorfer arrived, he found that the car involved in the crash matched the car that had been stolen. Nobody was still at the crash site, but a witness said he had seen several people run from the car.
Waupaca County Sheriff's Deputy Dan Lewinski also responded to the crash scene. He saw a man running behind a nearby house, chased him and caught him. The man was Tankersley's brother, who said Tankersley had been the driver, according to the criminal complaint.
Waupaca Police Officer Paul Benzschawel also assisted with the search for the occupants of the vehicle. He found Tankersley in a nearby garage.
The bartender at Paca Pub told police that she had left her car running while she closed up the bar.
Tankersley was previously convicted of drinking and driving offenses in October 2008, July 2010 and November 2010. His license was revoked for 33 months in November 2010.
