Waupaca man charged with hit-and-run

Nov. 2, 2011 | 3 comments

Darrian R. Rahn, 43, Waupaca, was charged with two counts of hit-and-run involving injury.

On the night of Aug. 30, Waupaca police received a call regarding a possible pedestrian-car accident at the corner of West Fulton Street and Western Avenue. A passerby had seen a young woman lying on the street and another woman who appeared to be helping her.

When police arrived at the scene, nobody was there, and the employees at McDonald's did not know anything about an accident at the intersection.

A short time later, police were called out to Riverside Medical Center regarding two women who had been injured in a hit-and-run.

Police met with a woman in the hospital's lobby who said she was their friend and had been at one of the victim's apartment when they arrived after being hit by a car. They initially believed their injuries were not serious enough for medical attention, but their friend insisted on taking them to the hospital because one of them seemed to have a broken leg and the other had suffered a head injury.

The friend told police that the two women had been brought to the apartment in a small, dark car and that he had informed a neighbor that he was on a monitoring bracelet and needed to get home before his curfew.

Police contacted the Probation and Parole office and learned that Rahn drove a black Chevy Cavalier.

According to the criminal complaint, Rahn told police that the two women had suddenly appeared in front of him on a dark and rainy night. He said he stopped immediately after hitting them and offered to take them to the hospital, but they said they did not want to go, so he took them home.

Rahn was convicted of a sex registry violation and sentenced to 18 months in state prison in October 2009.

  1. I'm curious how this will turn out. If I'm understanding this correctly, the man did stop and did offer help, but they refused medical treatment so he took them home. If I'm reading this law correctly, it is law that one has to give a certain amount of information and if the police had to hunt for him, it sounds like he didn't give them that information. I understand the charges being filed, the law is the law and ignornace is no excuse for breaking the law, but the DA has bargained for so many probation sentences on more serious crimes, It will be interesting to see what he does with this one.

  2. To independentthinker- Iam the mother of one of the women that was hit. Somethings were not reported in this paper. Like the fact that Rahn in fact did leave the scene, the women were walking in the cross walk and that Rahn had a red light. He came down around dollar general and past the auto parts store. He came up to them and only claimed that he saw what happen, not that he was the one who did it. It was not found out till after we got back from the hospital that he admitted to the neighbor that he was the one that did it!!! So no he did not stop!
