Waupaca woman loses car after giving stranger a ride
Michael D. Cole, 20, Menasha, was charged with operating a vehicle without the owner's consent.
On Oct. 22, Waupaca Police Officer Nicole Hahn met with a woman on Water Street to investigate a stolen car complaint.
The woman said she had given a friend a ride from Oshkosh to Waupaca the previous day. She had also agreed to pick up his friend, whom she only knew as "Mike," in Appleton and bring him to Waupaca, too.
She said she was told that Mike would be at a home on Marcelus Street, but she couldn't find that address on her GPS, so they met him at a McDonald's in Appleton.
Later, Mike asked the woman repeatedly to give him a ride back to the Fox Valley area. She said he would need to wait until her father was done working.
The following morning, the woman discovered that her car keys had been taken from her purse.
Hahn was able to track Mike down after contacting the Winnebago County jail. She obtained a photo of Michael Cole, who had been recently released from custody.
The woman recognized Cole from the photo as the man she believed stole her car. She pointed to his neck and told police that there was a tattoo that said, "Loyalty."
On Nov. 1, Sgt. Brian Hoelzel, of the Waupaca Police Department, met with Cole at the Winnebago County jail. He noted that Cole had a tattoo on his neck that said, "Loyalty."
