WPS warns customers of scam

Aug. 15, 2012 | 0 comments

Wisconsin Public Service (WPS) has received multiple reports of customers being told to pay their bill or face loss of utility service by someone claiming torepresent the electric or light company.

Reports indicate that one customer was told to purchase a prepaid card to make payment and another was told to prepare a money Pack for pick up at their residence.

WPS does not accept or request payment in the field and would not request a prepaid card payment.

If customers have been approached in this manner, WPS requests that customers inform the Customer Call Center at 1-800-450-7260. In addition, the customer should report the activity to the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection at 1-800-422-7128.

So far, it seems the fraud is being perpetrated in the Green Bay area and primarily trying to take advantage of the Hispanic community That does not mean, however, that the parties trying to prey on unsuspecting customers will not branch out to other customers and other locations.

Again, customers should report suspicious attempts to collect money by someone purporting to represent WPS, please confirm it is not a fraud by calling-800-450-7260 and by then reporting to the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection at 1-800-422-7128.
