Art exhibit to be held Feb. 23, 24

The Wolf River Art League’s Mid Winter Art Exhibit will be held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 23 and Sunday, Feb. 24, at New London High School.

Cash prizes and ribbons will be awarded in two-dimensional, three-dimensional and photography categories in three levels of work – student, non-professional and professional.

This year’s judge will be Jeff Hargreaves, an oil painter who grew up in southeastern Wisconsin and is a graduate of the Layton School of Art and Design.

He worked in the advertising industry as an art director, creative director and ultimately, as a freelance illustrator.

Hargreaves began his training through a series of workshops. In 2005, he pursued formalized training at the Kewaunee Academy of Fine Art.

He is currently a full-time representational fine artist. He teaches painting and drawing and leads a life drawing group.

Hargreaves will critique the Mid Winter Art Exhibit’s award-winning pieces at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 23.

After the critique, artists may ask the judge questions about their individual pieces.

The viewing public may also choose their favorite works of art by voting for the People’s Choice Award.

The guest artist will be Lauren Radtke.

Radtke, a self-taught photographer from Wautoma, was the first-place winner in photography at the 2012 Mid Winter Art Exhibit.

Her interest in photography began when she was in high school.

Radtke, who is known for her “macro” photography, worked for a portrait photographer for eight years.

Her focus the past five years has been fine art photography.

She likes to show beauty where it is not typically seen, such as in frozen raindrops or decaying leaves, and is interested in conveying “expressionism” in the subjects she photographs.

The show is free and open to the public.

The high school, located at 1700 Klatt Road, will also be the site of other arts-related activities.

The school’s Art Team will have its “Bottomless Soup Bowl” for $10 and will sponsor an art market in the gym. There will be art demonstrations and entertainment.
