The charter school is faced with a unique situation: there are no empty schools in Amherst to move into! Although an exact location has not been set, the school is in the early phases of exploring a few locations within the Tomorrow River School District. Contributions will allow the school to create a unique and sustainable place of learning for grades 4K-6th. Not only will the school connect local, sustainable food suppliers and farmers for the lunch and educational programs, they will also build a school that follows those same deeply important ideologies in its construction and environmental impact. Community support will help the new charter school reach its’ goal. The school will utilize a Waldorf-inspired style of whole child education, fostering creative, compassionate and confident children cultivating a lifelong love of learning. This non-competitive learning environment will be offered tuition-free to Amherst and surrounding communities through open enrollment. Highlights of the Tomorrow River Community Charter School: • Music, art, and movement are greatly employed in the learning process: eurythmy, watercolors, recorder, violin, knitting, wood carving and nature crafts. • Storytelling is used to awaken imagination, retain attention and teach subjects such as math, history, geography, social studies, writing & reading. • Emphasis is put on nature and environmental stewardship. Children spend ample time outside exploring the world around them gaining a deeper understanding of science and nature. • Children are taught real life tasks: housekeeping, cooking, fiber arts, and gardening. • Technology is de-emphasized in the early years at school and at home. • Foreign language immersion begins in first grade. • Teachers follow their students from first grade through sixth allowing them to develop a stronger relationship with their students and giving them the ability to create curriculum based on the class’s needs and strengths. • Main lessons (including traditional subjects) are typically taught in six week sessions giving children a deeper and more personal relationship with the material, leading to better retention. • Partake in seasonal studies and festivals.
