Crosscut Solutions thrives in Manawa

From woodworking to specialty saws to hanging plants

By Holly Neumann

Recognizing a need for specialty saws, Joe and Amy Starr created an ever evolving business, Crosscut Solutions.

The Starr’s history in the woodworking industry runs deep, which has fueled their awareness for a cut off saw in this industry. Therefore, in 2003, they opened a manufacturing facility.

Crosscut Solutions has become the cornerstone of numerous manufacturing endeavors.

Located at E5763 County Trunk B, Manawa, they manufacture cut off saws and specialty conveyors for both the woodworking and aluminum industry. They also do used equipment repair.

“We offer a cut off saw that is superior in quality and performance,” Amy Starr said. “The saw is very low maintenance and that’s what keeps our customers coming back.”

Not ones to shy away from a new challenge, Starr expanded her business in 2010 to include a greenhouse that specializes in unique and vintage potted arrangements, to better serve the community of Manawa.

“We also sell vegetable garden plants, annuals, perennials, hanging baskets, shrubs, garden art and bulk mulch,” she said. “Right now, we’re heading toward the peak of fall season and we have a large assortment of mums, asters and other fall flowers.”

Crosscut Solutions Greenhouse hosts Wine and Vine events for members of the community and surrounding areas to attend.

“Our Wine and Vine events are very popular, giving attendees a chance to socialize, plant flowers at the potting table and enjoy food and beverages from the Lindsay House Bed & Breakfast,” said Starr. “We have approximately five events a year and our next event is Saturday morning, Sept. 12.”

She credits Manawa Area Chamber of Commerce and the Revitalization Committee for their success.

“The city of Manawa has worked hard on the downtown beautification project, which brings attention to our downtown with the hanging baskets and potted benches, while supporting local businesses and the school,” she said. “After driving through town, customers want to know where they can buy one of those gorgeous hanging baskets and we are happy to accommodate them.”

Currently, Crosscut Solutions has no plans for further expansion.

“We don’t have any plans right now, however we’re always open to new ideas that may come along in the manufacturing business,” Starr said. “The greenhouse business plans on offering more shrubs and trees next spring. The only limitation is time.”

Crosscut Solutions’ manufacturing business is a steady, year-round business, whereas the greenhouse is seasonal from May through October with varying hours. In May and June the greenhouse is open from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.; from July through October it is open 9 a.m.-5 p.m.
