‘Make Some Noise’ walk in Waupaca

Event focuses on domestic violence

The Waupaca Community Coordinated Response Team (CCRT) will hold a walk Monday, Oct. 26, to raise awareness about domestic abuse.

The one-mile “Make Some Noise” walk will begin at at 5 p.m. in front of Waupaca City Hall

Noisemakers will be available, or people may bring their own.

Domestic abuse resources will be available, and a Domestic Violence Awareness Month opening ceremony will be held prior to the walk.

The keynote speaker is Heather Severson, author of “The TraJa Act” that was signed into Wisconsin law April 9, 2012, making the third domestic violence conviction a felony.

“The TraJa Act was a move in the right direction on the fight against domestic abuse in our state,” said Heather Kangas, CAP Services’ Domestic Abuse Victim Advocate and CCRT member. “We encourage you to attend to learn more about this movement and meet the person whose passion helped change state law.”

October is national Domestic Violence Awareness Month, which remembers those who have lost their lives at the hands of someone they loved.

In 2014, there were a total of 43 domestic abuse fatalities in Wisconsin.

National research shows victims who are isolated from support and resources have higher chances of losing their lives in domestic violence incidents. When victims receive help from an advocate or a shelter, their chances of survival increase significantly.

CAP Services, a CCRT member and walk sponsor, serves Waupaca County residents who are victims of domestic abuse.

Services include a 24-hour crisis line, emergency shelter, advocacy, safety planning, assistance with restraining orders and support groups for women and children. All services are free and confidential.

CAP Services’ 24-hour crisis line is 800-472-3377. The Waupaca Domestic Abuse Outreach office number is 715-258-9575 Ext. 201.
