Manawa offers Gorman chief’s position

Council tables decision on Remington statue

By Jane Myhra

Detective Sgt. James Gorman with the Waupaca County Sheriff’s Office was offered the Manawa police chief position.

Gorman’s conditional employment, pending physical and psychological tests, was approved by the Manawa Common Council at its Nov. 16 meeting.

A Manawa resident, Gorman said he is excited about accepting the new position.

“There are no words to describe it,” he told the council.

Gorman later told the Waupaca County Post that he had passed the tests and was scheduled to meet with the mayor on Wednesday, Nov. 25.

According to Mayor John Smith, the entire council was involved with the interview and hiring process, with the help of New London Police Chief Jeff Schlueter.

“He guided us,” said Mary Eck, “but gave us the tools to make the decision ourselves.”

During public comments, Ken Groholski talked about the history of the Remington bronco statue. He was involved in the fundraising for the statue.

“I thought it would be a good thing for the city of Manawa, not just because of the rodeo, but as an art piece,” Groholski said.

He said no one objected to the statue being placed at Triangle Park.

“We would certainly like to have it stay there, if at all possible,” he said.

Under the recommendation of the Improvements and Services Committee, the council agreed to table the horse statue discussion and reconsider the topic in 2016.

“We have heard quite a bit of feedback, and it goes both ways,” Smith said. “So, it is best to just let it ride.”
