The Waupaca School District is preparing to raze the old Central School, located at 515 School St. The administrative offices will remain in their present location at the east end of the building. The older, two-story section located on the west side of the facility will be removed and replaced by green space, according to District Administrator Dave Poeschl. "Grass will be planted as part of the demolition contract," Poeschl said. The district is working with an architectural recovery company, Crescent Moon Antiques and Salvage of Oshkosh, and the Waupaca Historical Society to salvage anything of value from the structure of the building. The items may be used in future district projects or simply for display purposes. Robinson Brothers of Waunakee is responsible for asbestos abatement and demolition. Julie Karner, owner of Crescent Moon Antiques and Salvage, hopes to preserve some of the building’s key elements and architectural details. She said she is working with the historical society to recover not only architectural elements, but some things that may seem insignificant to those who are not aware of local history. "These details tell our stories, and these stories become our history." Karner said. Crescent Moon first catalogs the structure and its details with photographs. Then, it b systematically recovers both interior and exterior materials iso they can be used in new building, remodeling and decorative projects. Demolition is set to begin in early October. Poeschl said the combined bid for asbestos removal and demolition was a total of $98,071. An additional $50,000 will be spent to relocate or replace electric, water and heating, ventilation and air conditioning components, and to finish off the new outside wall for the remaining part of the building.

This is a form of public sector embezzlement.
And, until we see a better explanation, it was probably arson.
