World War II Army Veteran Joseph Douglas Smith, 87, of New London attended Memorial Day services at Royalton Cemetery. He served in the Pacific Theater. “The worst battle was Okinawa,” he recalled. “We lost 39,000 there.” Smith claimed his unit had a front row seat to the action. He served with the 295 Joint Assault Signal Company, which served as spotters to direct fire for the infantry units
