Violet "Vi" M. (Donner) Hayes of Waupaca, age 94, passed away on Friday, April 27, 2012. She was born in the Town of Aurora, Gilman, WI on April 30, 1917 to the late Herbert and Jeanette (Miller) Donner. On January 4, 1937 she married Harold Hayes. He preceded her in death in 1975. Vi was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church of Waupaca and a member of the Ladies Auxiliary at the Wisconsin Veterans Home, King. She was a member of the Lac Courte Oreilles Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians, Bear Clan, and a former member of the Tribal Governing Board. Vi, whose Indian name was Sagimakwe, was honored by the Tribe as Anishinabekwe (Indian Woman) of the year in 1996. She is survived by her son, Hugh (Sharyn) Hayes, Ogdensburg; step-daughter, Betty (Gene) Alcorn, WA; daughter-in-law, Marilyn Potack, Hayward; sister, Freda Rogalis, CA; brothers, Bob Donner and Herb (June) Donner, WA; grandchildren, Mike (Mary) Hayes, Dan (Anita) Hayes, Pat (Angie) Hayes, Kathy Hayes, Kelly Hayes, Harold Hayes, Tammy (Steve) Valentine, Mark Hayes, Terri Hayes, Jody (Nick) Pankratz, Stacey (Brian) Donovan, Cory (Jennie) Peterson, 17 great-grandchildren, 1 great-great-grandson, and many other relatives and friends. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her son, Herbert; daughter-in-law, Norma Hayes; brothers, Leon and Jess Donner; and sister, Pearl Strizic. Her funeral was held on Monday, April 30, 2012 at 11 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church, Waupaca, with Rev. Dr. Charles L. Tews officiating. Visitation was held at the church from 9 a.m. until the time of the service. Friends and family called at the church on May 2 from 12:00 p.m. until the time of service. Memorials may be made to St Paul Lutheran Church.
