Concerned about taxpayers' rights, not teachers'

May 2, 2012 | 0 comments

Christine Anderson says she doesn't understand the hostility towards teachers' unions. She only knows two teachers she believes to be incompetent.

Well, I pity the child who gets two incompetent teachers. They may never recover.

How about teachers who would diagnose every active child as suffering from a Ritalin deficiency? How many such teachers does it take to change a child's life? Do we want them protected by unions?

Anderson wants to know who will protect the teachers without unions.

The administrators will protect them. The school boards will protect them, and if that's not enough, we have fair employment laws, administrative judges and courts to protect teachers.

I'm more concerned with who is protecting the students.

Anderson says we want to pay teachers next to nothing. Show me a teacher who makes next to nothing. I can show you teachers making over $50,000 per year (excuse me, $50,000 per 180 days of work).

The unions want a governor who will end the property tax caps so our taxes can be raised to get the money flowing again. The unions want to protect teachers from pay based on performance. The unions want to be able to "collaborate" with school boards (a veto on anything they don't like).

I'll worry about the teachers and their pay when you can show me a teaching job no one is showing up for. As long as we have plenty of applicants for teaching jobs, I'm more concerned with taxpayers rights than teachers right.
