Lessons from Lake Iola drawdown

May 16, 2012 | 2 comments

Now that the water is drawn down, we can appreciate just how shallow Lake Iola is.

At the April 30, Lake Association meeting, it was estimated that the silt accumulation that was anticipated to wash over the dam did not do so as expected and now the lake, in many areas, is several feet shallower than before the drawdown.

Dredging was brought up at the April 30 Lake Association meeting. We have all been looking at a very shallow lake, since the drawdown began. Who wouldn't welcome, the scene of a front-end loader scooping debris, silt and stumps into a dump truck, and removing this material from the lake bottom.

Issues that once clouded the discussion - such as frog habitat, fish breeding areas, the existing fish population, even the idea of a drawdown itself - are no longer at issue. The drawdown is here. The question now is how to get the most out of it.

It is my belief, after owning a home on Lake Iola for the past 34 years, that after the group cleaned out the "pond" in 1964-65, to develop and sell lots, the usability, depth and overall quality of the lake experience was pretty nice through the mid-1980s.

Then the lake started going backwards: fertilizer runoffs upstream, major silt accumulation, invasive weeds, swimmers itch, the swimming area at Taylor Park no longer usable, among other problelms. We then started the band aid approach - weed spraying, weed cutting, lake studies and minor partial drawdowns. We ended up with such a mess that when a major draw down was voted on, only two people voted against it. I believe people who voted for the drawdown were really voting for a nicer future lake.

What is needed is acknowledgement that if we want some quality to our lake, we will need a 20-year, reclamation plan much like the 1964-65 clean-out accomplished. The plan, should be comprised of a combination of partial dredging to remove silt accumulation and a major draw down for invasive weed control. If done right, we can expect results similar to the 20 years after 1965. Just ask folks who were here during this time period.

As to the idea of dredging, there are a lot of resources in Iola. We have owners of excavation equipment. We have some forward thinking minds, we need an attitude of "How can we make this work? "Instead of, "There are so many things against us, we can't do it."

Now that the lake is down, let's go all in and find a way to dredge as much silt and debris as is possible. Come to the Lake Iola annual meeting Saturday June 2nd at the Iola- Scandinavia High School, and help make this happen.

  1. Wow, I hear you. I lived in Scandinavia in the 1980's and my children learned to swim in Taylor lake. Then the swimmers itch came. How well I remember. Now I live in Weyauwega and we have our lake down. But our drawdown is a much different experience in Weyauwega. I think Taylor Lake and Lake Weyauwega came down at the same time. Our lake was drawn down from the bottom, not the top, so the current acted like a vacuum cleaner and sucked out lots of muck. We had great head cutting and the river channel has deepened and widened dramatically. This warm winter caused the bottom muck to dry out and crack into two foot deep fissures, With the spring rains we have seen more muck removal and even better results. We have a Facebook page with lots of pictures and a move made about the drawdown and how we did it. Now we are looking into what plants we can use to keep the lake clean and viable. We also plan on bi-annual partial draw downs to keep the muck from accumulating on the bottom. We are also considering fish ladders to encourage a healthy fish population.
For Lake Weyauwega - So far so good.

  2. August 27 iola lake meeting was held.they talked about the drain tile which is 2' 5'' inches below the dam outlet sill at a location about 43' ft up inside the pipe. with that information we designed a structure that would provide a means of draining the lake even during high water events. this lake draining also could be used to provide additional discharge through the dam when needed, because it will be easier to turn this gate valve open some instead of taking out wood boards. the attached plans and cost opinion reflect an opportunity to lower the lake 2 ' ft. the estimated cost for this would be 50,000 it includes a concrete manhole built over the existing storm sewer with a manual gate to drain water from the bottom of the lake into a 36' pipe extending about 40' ft. into the lake. bids will be taken for this work. The river has gained alot of depth but not the lake it's self, and the lake will never gain depth.the mill dam takes out our high water now so we don't need a special pipe for that. As home owners i think we could get 600,000 th.if each home owner would doenate 1,000 per house hold next year to be used towards mechanical removing sediment from our lake. about this pipe or drain tile, the village owns the pipe, we are stupid to take a loan out through the village and pay it back with interest for four years. this 2' ft.of water is going to do anything for weed control. A special meeting will be held on sept. 29 th at 9 am on highway 161 near the old car show building., be there we need to vote this down.
