Truckers drop home opener
The Clintonville Truckers opened the 2010 football season at home with a 31-19 loss to the Little Chute Mustangs on Friday, Aug. 27.
Little Chute scored first on a 13 yard run, and the kick was good to take the lead in the first quarter. The Truckers struggled in the run department, gaining only 89 yards on 44 attempts for the entire game. However, Clintonville did catch a break in the second quarter when John Maas intercepted a Mustang pass. The Truckers moved the ball down to the one yard line where Joe Hauser punched it in on a run from one yard out. Hauser kicked the extra point to tie the game at seven apiece.
Little Chute came right back and caught the Truckers off guard with a 23-yard pass; the kick was good to go up 14-7. An errant fourth down snap turned the ball back over to the Mustangs who capitalized before half with a 29-yard field goal that caromed off a Trucker player and then through the uprights. Little Chute led 17-7 at the half.
Clintonville stiffened in the second half, not giving up any points in the third quarter. However, a break-down on defense for the Truckers allowed Little Chute a 46-yard run; the kick failed putting the Mustangs up 23-7.
Clintonville responded with an 80-yard kick-off return by Hauser. The two-point conversion failed and the Truckers trailed 23-13. An 11-yard run and two-point conversion completed Little Chute's scoring for the evening; they led 31-13.
The Truckers would not quit. A fumble recovered by Trenten Gauthier gave Clintonville the opportunity to score once more. A 34-yard pass from quarterback Ben Klein to receiver Brandon Sivertson set-up Joe Hauser's four yard run for his third touchdown of the game.
Even though Clintonville came out on the short end of the game, there are some positives that the Truckers will come away with. Coach Bob Petermann commented how the kids never gave up.
"They kept plugging away, giving their all. We need to clean-up a few areas and make some corrections in our blocking schemes," Petermann said. "Executing the fundamentals of blocking and tackling that we have been working on will be emphasized in the upcoming week."
The Truckers travel to Ripon on Friday, Sept. 3 to take on the Tigers. Game time is 7 p.m.
