Bulldogs mount comeback, fall short of win
The varsity baseball team was off to a strong start at home against Marinette, the top ranked-team in their division, Friday, May 6.
New London retired the first three batters Marinette sent to the plate.
Next, the Bulldog's lead-off hitter was struck out, but the second hitter, Matt Hermsen (#4) hit a triple, making the first hit of the day. Next up was Jake Quinter (#13) who hit a single, bringing Hermsen home, and scoring the first run of the day. Ethan Steingraber hit fourth, and hit a single, sending Quinter to second base. Unfortunately for the Bulldogs the next two hitters had fly balls caught and were forced out.
New London led 1-0 at the end of the first inning.
In the second inning, Marinette's first batter had a foul ball caught by the third baseman for the first out. Next up at bat was Joey Brusig (#7), who was walked to first base. The next batter, Luke Kelly (#18) hit a single, which brought Brusig to second base. Next up was Matt Topel (#11). Topel hit a single which brought both Brusig and Kelly home. The following batter hit a single but was forced out at first. Unfortunately while this was happening, Topel had stolen home plate, making three runs for Marinette that inning.
New London had a quick second inning with only four batters being able to go to the plate. The score was 3 - 1 Marinette after the second.
In the third inning Marinette's lead-off hitter hit a fly ball to the short stop and the second was struck out. The next two hitters were walked to first base and the following hit a single. Kelly was up to bat next and hit a triple, bringing all three of the runners home. Luckily Kelly was forced out at third base, making the third out for that inning.
The bottom of the third was a three up, three out inning for New London at bat.
Marinette stayed hot at the plate as they managed to build up several more runs in the fourth.
For New London, first at bat Zach Hofherr (#12) hit a single, followed by a single by Matt Wilfur (#17). Zach stole third base and ran home while Wilfur was being walked to second base. The next three batters were the inning's three outs. The score was 10 - 2 Marinette at the end of the fourth.
In the fifth inning Ethan Thiel, hit a single, and wound up on base off an error by the third baseman from Marinette. Hermsen was walked to first and Thiel proceeded to second. Quinter also hit a single, and brought Thiel home. The next batter hit a fly ball to left field and was the first out for the team. Z. Hofherr was forced out at first, but thanks to that hit, New London now had runners on second and third as Hermsen and Quinter took their next bases. Wilfur hit a single which brought both Hermsen and Quinter home, scoring two more runs that inning.
The score was 10-5 after the fifth. In the sixth inning only five Marinette players got up to bat and none made it home.
After another pitcher change, New London eyed the chance to make up some runs. Bulldog Catcher, Colton Dunbar (#19) was walked to first base and given a courtesy runner, Austin Huntley (#5). Hunter Paul (#16) hit a triple, which brought Huntley home, bringing up the score to 10 - 7 Marinette. The next three batters all hit fly balls that were caught.
In the seventh inning, New London only allowed three batters from Marinette to step up to the plate.
Next, New London's first batter hit a fly ball to center field to make the first out. Zach Hofherr and Wilfur both hit singles. With runners on first and second Peyton Hofherr (#10) was up to bat. P. Hofherr hit a Home run to right field, tying up the score, 10 - 10. Dunbar hit a single, and was once again given Huntley for a courtesy runner. Next at bat was Paul, who bunted and was thrown out at first, but this allowed Huntley to take second base.
The game was tied up 10 - 10 going into the eighth, and Klumb from Marinette hit a single. The second batter attempted a bunt, but fouled it and it was caught by the New London catcher. Tyler Jardrey (#10) was at bat when Klumb attempted to steal second base. He did not make it and was forced out at second. Jardrey hit a single. The next batter hit a fly ball to left field and was the third out for Marinette.
For New London the first batter hit a fly ball to center field and the next two were struck out. In the ninth, the first batter hit a fly ball to center field for the first out. Brusig and Johnson both hit singles. Topel hit a sacrifice and was forced out at third while Brusig and Johnson proceeded to second and third. Belonga was walked and Klumb hit a single which brought Brusig and Johnson home. Pettit was up to bat and hit a single. Unfortunately it also brought Belonga and Klumb home. The next batter was forced out at first to end the inning.
The Bulldogs tried but couldn't mount a comeback in the final innings as and Marines took home the 14-10 victory.
