Karina Welch singled with two outs and two strikes in the bottom of the seventh inning for a 7-6 come-from-behind victory for the Iola-Scandinavia softball team over West Salem Saturday, April 21, at Milwaukee’s Alverno College.

Elle Maus singled to set up Welch’s game-winning hit. Maus got to second on a ground out by Whitney Tomczak and Sophie Erdmann replaced Maus at second. Jane Oligney followed with a single to advance Erdmann to third. Oligney stole second before Welch singled up the middle just beyond West Salem’s shortstop to score Erdmann and Oligney for the tying and winning runs.

Pitcher Payton Erickson went the distance in earning the win. Erickson allowed six hits, no walks while striking out two batters. The T-Birds defense struggled at times committing six errors, but also made some very nice plays to help Erickson out.

Maus had three hits and drove in two runs. Kylie Johnson, Brooke Phillips and Welch each had two hits. Phillips drove in one run while Welch drove in the two big runs in the seventh inning.
