Area wrestlers headed to two conference meets
Waupaca's and Weyauwega-Fremont's wrestling teams will wrap up the regular season Saturday, Feb. 4, at their respective conference tournaments.
Waupaca will head to Appleton for the Eastern Valley Conference Meet at 9:45 a.m. at Fox Valley Lutheran with FVL, Clintonville, Little Chute, Freedom, Berlin, Ripon and Winneconne. W-F will compete with Amherst, Manawa, Shiocton, Bonduel, Wittenberg-Birnamwood, Menominee Indian, Rosholt and Plainfield Tri-County/Almond-Bancoft at 10 a.m. in Shiocton at the Central Wisconsin Conference Meet.
The Comets wrapped up the EVC dual schedule Thursday, Jan. 26, with a 72-12 loss at Winneconne, while the Indians defeated PT-C/A-B 75-5 in a CWC matchup.
Winneconne 72, Waupaca 12
WINNECONNE - Winneconne won all eight contested matches by pin as Waupaca wrestled without Connor Avery, Levi Petroske, Joe Selsing and Seth Deuman.
Winneconne's Joey Lefeber pinned Ben Leonard in 45 seconds at 106, Boone Roycraft (113) pinned Austin Gonyou in 3:30, John Roycraft (126) pinned Kelly Lind in 4:49, Matt Seelow (132) pinned Bohdi Gust in 2:54, Brett Wenzel (138) pinned Miguel Barazza in 57 seconds, Sam Engel (152) pinned Mitch Molder in 3:45, Andrew Beaulieu (160) pinned Tom Phillipson in 1:52 and Hunter Seelow (170) pinned Mike Hagen in 1:01.
Waupaca's points came on forfeits to Chris Smith (182) and Logan Feldt (285). Waupaca also forfeited to Cal Cottrell (120), Kyle Brasch (145), Chip Breuer (195) and Bryce Chaney (220).
W-F 75, PT-C/A-B 5
ALMOND - PT-C/A-B picked up the first points of the match, as Russell Carey earned 15-0 technical fall over Brandon Loehrke at 160, but that turned out to be the Titans' only win.
Jordan Haase gave W-F the lead for good in the next match with a win by forfeit at 170. The Titans also forfeited to Jackson Stearns (195), Andy Bork (285), Isaac Danke (106), Oliver Radtke (113), Nick Thomas (126) Tre Blohm (132) and Casey Lenz (152).
Mike Howe pinned Brandon Trout in 1:39 at 182, Allen Bentle pinned Luke Mullins in 2:56 at 220, Kaleb Sciborski pinned Jacob Vallery in 1:20 at 120, Jared Gruetzmacher picked up a 5-1 win over Joe Woyak at 138 and Trevor Potratz pinned Steaphan Lischka in 32 seconds at 145.
The road to the state tournament for all wrestlers begins Saturday, Feb. 11.
W-F will host a Division 3 regional that will also include Amherst, Manawa, Rosholt, Shiocton and Tri-County/Almond-Bancroft at 10:15 a.m., while Waupaca will join Mosinee, Nekoosa/Port Edwards, Tomahawk, Wild Rose/Wautoma and Wittenberg-Birnamwood at the Division 2 Mosinee Regional at 10 a.m.
Waupaca will also host a Division 2 sectional starting at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 18. The top two wrestlers from the Mosinee, Berlin, Seymour and Southern Door regionals will compete.
W-F wrestlers that advance out of their regional will advance to the Auburndale Sectional at 10:30 a.m. Feb. 18, along with qualifiers from the Three Lakes, Athens and Mishicot regionals.
The top three sectional finishers in divisions 2 and 3 will advance to the State Individual Wrestling Meet, scheduled for Thursday to Saturday, Feb. 23-25, at the Kohl Center in Madison.
