Comet girls drop two EVC games
Fox Valley Lutheran and Appleton Xavier each picked up an Eastern Valley Conference girls' basketball win over Waupaca.
FVL handed the Comets a 53-48 defeat Friday, Dec. 9, in Appleton, while Xavier defeated Waupaca 52-31 Tuesday, Dec. 6, in Waupaca.
FVL 53, Waupaca 48
APPLETON - The teams headed into the fourth quarter tied at 35-35, but the Foxes hit eight of 10 free throws down the stretch.
FVL outscored the Comets 14-9 in the first quarter, but Waupaca outscored the home team 17-11 in the second quarter to take a 26-25 halftime lead.
The Foxes had a 10-9 advantage in the third quarter and outscored Waupaca 18-13 over the final eight minutes.
Ashlie Hoffman led the Comets' balanced scoring with 11 points, while Mikaila Johnson and Abbey Lazers added seven each and Courtney Schmidt chipped in with six.
FVL's Katie Doell scored 10 of her game-high 18 points in the fourth quarter.
Xavier 52, Waupaca 31
WAUPACA - The Hawks outscored the Comets in each quarter to pick up the win.
Xavier led 15-12 after one quarter, 27-17 at halftime and 44-25 after three quarters.
Lazers led Waupaca with 10 points, while Alta Littrel added eight.
Lexi Kersten had 14 to lead Xavier.
Waupaca will travel to Berlin to take on the league-leading Indians Tuesday, Dec. 20, before a nonconference game Thursday, Dec. 22, at Green Bay Southwest.
