Comets keep pace with Pines
Waupaca Comet hockey fans might want to pencil in Friday, Feb. 10, on their calendar.
That's the day the Comets will hope Northland Pines in a contest that will probably decide the Great Northern Conference championship.
Pines currently leads the league with a 9-1 mark, while the Comets are a half-game behind at 9-2 following a 5-2 win Tuesday, Jan. 17, over Antigo. Waupaca also handed Waupun a 4-0 shutout Thursday, Jan. 19, in nonconference action.

Comet goalie Zach Martin stopped all 30 of the Warriors' shots on goal to get the shutout.
Jared Erickson had two goals for Waupaca, while Bjorn Asher added a goal and an assist; Hunter Vezina scored; and Dante Grorich, Jordan Erickson, Cooper Flesch, Beau Ash and Caleb Kiesow picked up an assist.
Waupaca outshot the Warriors 34-30.
Waupaca 5, Antigo 2
Waupaca came up with three unanswered goals in less than four minutes in the third period to get the win over the Red Robins.
Zach Fleischman gave Antigo a 1-0 lead in the first period, but Jared Erickson came up with the first of his two goals off of an assist from Sam Menzies. Dan Will scored to give Antigo a 2-1 lead heading into the second period.
Jared Erickson scored the game's only goal of the second period off of an assist from Jared Erickson to tie the game at 2-2.
Ash scored a power play goal off of an assist from Jared Erickson to give the Comets the lead for good. Asher came up with an unassisted goal two minutes later and Kiesow capped the scoring, with Vezina getting credit for the assist.
Martin finished with 19 saves as the Comets outshot the Red Robins 32-21.
The Comets began a stretch of three straight nonconference games by hosting Bay Port Tuesday, Jan. 24. Waupaca will head to Ashwaubenon for a 7 p.m. game Friday, Jan. 27, with the Jaguars before hosting De Pere at 7 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 28. The Comets will return to conference play at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 2, at the Waupaca Expo Center against Medford.
