Defense does its job in loss to W-B
Even though it wasn't a win, Weyauwega-Fremont girls' basketball coach Joe Titus was still happy with his team's defensive performance Friday, Jan. 27, in a 44-41 loss to Wittenberg-Birnamwood.
The Indians also saw their nine-game winning streak end Tuesday, Jan. 24, with a 58-34 loss at Amherst.
W-B 44, W-F 41
WITTENBERG - The Chargers defeated the Indians by 10 points in December in the Central Wisconsin 8 Conference opener.
This time around, the score was much closer with W-F playing without starter Danielle Austreng.
Both teams scored 10 points in the first quarter and 13 in the third quarter. The Chargers led 24-21 at halftime and 37-34 heading into the fourth quarter.
"It was by far our best defensive effort of the year," Titus said. "The girls took away a lot of things they like to do. Mariah (Hulbert) and Ellen (Schroeder) hit some key threes late in the game, but some turnovers cost us. I'm very proud of what the girls did tonight without Dani in the lineup."
Hulbert led all scorers with 15 points, while Jenni Hellweg added a team-high 14 rebounds.
Amherst 58, W-F 34
AMHERST - Amherst stayed unbeaten in CWC-8 play by holding the Indians to three points in the second quarter and eight in the third and fourth.
The Falcons held a slim 18-15 lead into the second quarter, but led 28-18 at halftime and 45-26 after three quarters.
Hulbert led the Indians with nine points, while Katy Rutz and Marisa Loken led Amherst with 16 and 15, respectively.
"Amherst did a much better job on the boards," Titus said. "We looked very good out of the gate, but mistakes snowballed on us. The little things added up to big things for them and against us."
The Indians fell to 9-5 overall and 5-3 in conference play with the losses. W-F played at Gillett Tuesday, Jan. 31, and will host Bonduel Friday, Feb. 3, before heading to Stevens Point Pacelli Tuesday, Feb. 7.
