Griffin, Johnson earn victories
Garret Griffin and Casey Johnson didn't disappoint the home wrestling fans, as each won their respective weight class at the Manawa Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 14.
A total of five school wrestling programs participated in the Invitational, with the Omro taking home team honors by 43 points over Kewaunee. Rosholt was a distant third, following by the Manawa Wolves. Tri-County/Almond-Bancroft finished fifth.
Individually Griffin and Johnson paced the Manawa Wolves team. Griffin received a bye in the first round and then pinned Dathan Smerchek of Rosholt in the second round. He pinned his opponent in the next two rounds. In the fifth round, he faced Jason Will of Omro. It took two minutes and 35 seconds for Griffin to pin Will and win the 152-pound weight class.
Johnson used the same path as Griffin on his way to the victory in the 182-pound weight class. After a first round bye, Johnson pinned his opponents in the next three rounds before facing Trevor Kolodzik of Omro in the fifth round. After three minutes and 55 seconds, Johnson pinned Kolodzik and took home first place.
In the 126-pound weight class, Jacob Frenche won his first round match by a major decision. He then had a bye the next three rounds before getting pinned by Jason Timm of Omro in the championship round.
Christian Bertram was defeated by pin in the first round, and received a bye in the second round. He then pinned his opponent in the next three rounds to finish second in the 138-pound weight class.
Brad Grimm received byes in three of the five rounds, and finished in third place in the 132-pount weight class.
Joe Vande Vrede won by pin in two different rounds, received a bye in another, and was defeated by decision and by pin in the remaining two rounds. This gave him a third place finish in the 170-pound weight class.
Nick Swenson, Cole Thompson and Cody Wildenberg each finished fifth in their respective weight classes.
