Gymnasts open season at Manitowoc

Dec. 21, 2011 | 0 comments

Clintonville gymnasts open the season with a 9 team invitational at Manitowoc. Wisconsin Rapids came out on top by .4 (129.9) over Oshkosh W/N/L 's 129.55. Manitowoc was 3rd, West Bend West 4th, Menomonee Falls/Germantown 5th, Grafton/Cedarburg 6th, Valders/Roncalli 7th, Hartford 8th, and Clintonville 9th. Despite finishing 9th, the team score of 98 points is as high as the team had at the end of the last season. We are very proud of the team and are excited about seeing what they are capable of doing.

The team started out strong on floor with new routines and plenty of spunk. Tisha Kenfield lead the team with a 7.425, Amber Krueger scored 6.925, Rachel Wisneski a 6.6, Destiny Pelky had 5.825 and Wendy Jensen scored 5.525. Even though there is room for improvement all the gymnasts had full or within .3 of full difficulty (3.0). Execution will improve with each meet but the team is further along than they have ever been on floor routines.

Vault was the next event for the team. In warm ups, Destiny Pelky rolled her toe over and was questionable. After some time, she was able to perform well enough to be included in the top four scores with a 7.1. Kenfield scored 7.1, Krueger 7.4, and Wisneski had 7.6 for a total of 29.2 for the event.

Uneven bars proved to be the weakest event for the team with only four competitors. Wisneski led the team with a 5.875. We know the team is not reaching their potential on bars, but they are willing to work hard to improve.

Beam was the last event of the day and even with some tough skills, Wendy Jensen (6.0) and Amber Krueger (6.65) had no falls. Kenfield led the team (6.975), Wisneski (6.275), and Pelky (5.3) each having only one fall.

Mosinee 87.9

Clintonville 85.15

The gymnastics team continued their season with their second meet held at home against Mosinee. Although the team took all the first and third places on each event, they were missing freshman, Amber Krueger, (out with a sprained wrist) and without her four strong scores, there weren't quite enough points to secure a win. Clintonville 85.15 to Mosinee's 87.9.

Vault was a great event with 3 of the 4 gymnasts tying or improving their score from the first meet. Wendy Jensen stuck her landings on both vaults for 6.65, Destiny Pelky continues to improve with 6.775, Tisha Kenfield placed 3rd with 7.575 and Rachel Wisneski took 1st with 7.575.

Wisneski also placed 1st on uneven bars with a strong routine. As she cleans up the execution she will be placing in many more meets. Kenfield took 3rd with 3.75 and Jensen improved her score from last week.

Bars is still a challenge, but the team is on the verge of accomplishing some new moves. It is an event you cannot practice at home or on your own, but they are getting stronger and continue the repetition it takes to learn new skills. 1st and 3rd went to Wisneski and Kenfield (5.425) respectfully on beam. Wisneski had a no fall, routine and scored an impressive 6.5, her personal best. Jensen and Pelky filled the other 2 spots with 3.9 and 3.475.

Kenfield came on strong on floor to take 1st with a score of 6.625. Wisneski, Jensen and Pelky finished the event with scores of 6.3, 5.95 and 5.225. The routines keep improving and are cleaner and smoother with each week.

The team starts the new year with a home meet January 3 against Manitowoc. The meet begins at 6:30 p.m. at Rexford/Longfellow.
