Hawks spoil Trucker Homecoming with shutout

Oct. 12, 2011 | 0 comments

Homecoming 2011 was not as joyous as it could have been Friday night, as the Appleton Xavier Hawks defeated the Clintonville Truckers 24-0.

The game was going to be a battle, featuring the number one defense in fewest points allowed going against the number one scoring offense. It proved to be a defensive game early as neither team would score in the first quarter. In the second quarter, Xavier was able to put together a 77-yard drive capped-off by a Ben Jensen one yard run. Matt Sacilliano's extra point kick made it 7-0 Hawks with 2:42 left in the first half.

After an A.J. Russell 33-yard kickoff return, the Truckers started on their own 38 yard line. Two runs later the Truckers were moving the ball and on the fifty yard line. On second and ten, a wrong route by a Trucker receiver led to a Xavier interception. Xavier moved the ball down to the five yard line where the Clintonville defense kept them out of the end zone. The Hawks settled for a 22-yard field goal, going up 10-0 at half time.

The Trucker defense stopped the Hawks on their first series of the second half forcing a Xavier punt. Clintonville took over on their own 44 yard line. Behind the running of Nathan Poppe and Jake Reiter the Truckers moved to the Xavier 18 yard line before a quarterback sack/fumble gave the ball to the Hawks thwarting any chance of a Trucker score.

Xavier put together another scoring drive with short quick passes which the Truckers were unable to stop. They moved the ball to the Clintonville nine yard line where Matt Sacilliano ran in for a score. Sacilliano's kick made it 17-0. Xavier added one more score on a Jack Little 30-yard run. The kick by Sacilliano finished the scoring making it 24-0.

"We knew going into this game that we had to play mistake free ball to compete with a very talented Xavier team. Costly penalties and two crucial turnovers did us in. Our defense is playing outstanding ball right now. We have to get our offense untracked. Players need to step up on the offensive side of the ball and make some plays," commented Coach Bob Petermann.

Petermann also noted that the Trucker Football Team will be performing Community Service this coming Saturday, October 15. They will be available to rake your leaves. Anyone interested in having their lawn raked should contact Karen Petermann at 715-250-1399. The football team will be available between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. A free will donation would be appreciated. Any further questions, contact head coach Bob Petermann at 715-250-0933.

Clintonville's next game is Friday, Oc. 14 at Fox Valley Lutheran. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.
