Hockey team wins pair of nonconference games
The Waupaca Comet hockey team picked up nonconference one-goal wins over Neenah/Hortonville/Menasha and Wisconsin Rapids.
The Comets defeated Neenah/Hortonville/Menasha 4-3 Thursday, Dec. 1, and Wisconsin Rapids 3-2 Tuesday, Nov. 29.
Waupaca 4, N/H/M 3
NEENAH - Bjorn Asher broke a 3-3 tie with a goal 14:26 into the third period to lift the Comets over the Rockets.
Asher led Waupaca with two goals and an assist.
The Rockets scored the game's first two goals before Waupaca's Caleb Kiesow cut the lead in half in the second period. The Rockets pushed the lead to 3-1 two minutes into the final period, but Waupaca answered with three unanswered goals. Asher found the net for an unassisted goal before Sam Menzies tied the game at 3-3 with 9:16 remaining.
Coach Randy Flesch said his team wasn't sharp in the early going.
"We were turning the puck over," he said. "We had guys trying to skate around two guys. You can't do that."
Flesch is happy to win at the Tri-County Ice Arena.
"This is where I grew up playing hockey," he said. "This is my hometown. I love to win here."
Waupaca 3, Wisconsin Rapids 2
WAUPACA - Jared Erickson gave the Comets a 2-0 lead with a pair of goals in the second period at the Waupaca Expo Center, while Kiesow scored a shorthanded goal 39 seconds into the third period.
The Raiders came back with a pair of goals from Caleb Schroer, but it wasn't enough.
"We're not going to win games 6-0," Flesch said. "We're going to win games 2-1, 2-0. We never give up."
The Comets returned to Great Northern Conference action Tuesday, Dec. 6, at home against Tomahawk and will travel to Antigo today (Thursday, Dec. 8) for a 7 p.m. matchup with the Red Robins.
