Lady Wolves fall to Tigerton
The Lady Wolves girls basketball team finished the pre-Christmas portion of its schedule with a disappointing 34-21 lose at Tigerton on Thursday, Dec. 22. The Lady Wolves managed a frigid 7 of 41 shots from the field, including a dismal 3 of 34 from two point range. They also turned the ball over 41 times and were shut out during the third quarter. Aided by 35 turnovers by the Lady Tigers Manawa was down by only seven points with 6:49 to play.
Converting three straight Manawa turnovers into points, Tigerton opened the game with an 8-0 run forcing a Manawa timeout with 5:47 left in the opening quarter. Following the timeout Senior Krista Braun's three-pointer triggered a 10-0 run, which carried into the second quarter. Junior Paige Schernecker's three-pointer gave Manawa its first lead of the night at 10-8 with 7:27 left in the first half.
Senior Kali Draeger's three-pointer broke a 12-12 tie, as Manawa took the lead at 15-12 with 2:51 left in the half. The Lady Tigers finished the half with a 7-2 run, aided by two key turnovers. The Lady Tigers held a 19-17-halftime lead.
Manawa's scoring drought carried into the second half as the Lady Wolves were shutout in the quarter. Tigerton put only four points on the board and held a 23-17 lead after three quarters of play.
Draeger's free throw finally ended the drought, and cut the deficit to seven points. The Lady Wolves had 14 fourth quarter turnovers to prevent a comeback. Braun's second three-pointer ended an incredible streak of 15:47 without a field goal.
Emily Ortner led the Tigers with 17 points and Braun led Manawa with 8 points. Junior Ansley Block pulled down six rebounds and Draeger added five. The Lady Wolves season mark dropped to 1-4.
