Lady Wolves go 1-1 for the week

Oct. 12, 2011 | 0 comments

The Lady Wolves celebrated Parent's Night on Tuesday, Oct. 4, when they played host to the Indians of Weyauwega-Fremont. The Wolves knew that it would be an intense match against Wega as the Indians are currently in third place for the CWC-8. An intense match it was indeed. Not only did the match go to a complete five sets, but two of those sets were played to extra points.

In the first set the Wolves shot out to an early 11-5 lead. They remained in the lead right up until the score was 24-17. Even with six set points to give, Manawa was unable to finish the game. With very impressive serving by W-F's Bailey Kapitzke, the Indians fought back to bring the score to 24-25. Earning only their side out, the Wolves stayed in the game, tying at 25 and 26. In the end, W-F earned two points first. The set sadly ended 28-26 in favor of the Indians.

The second set was all Wega. Manawa could not overcome their disappointment from set one and the Indians quickly finished the set, 25-12.

Manawa fought back in the third set. They once again took an early lead, going up 11-3. Towards the middle of the set, Wega brought the game within five, earning six points in a row, and making the score 17-12. Manawa would maintain that five point lead though and the set finished 25-20 in the Wolves favor.

The beginning of set four found the two teams in a defensive battle. Neither team scored more than three points at a time until the Wolves' Olivia Levezow stepped up to serve. She helped her team to a six-point run, giving them a four point (11-7) lead. Manawa stayed ahead until late in the game when Kapitzke served again. She once again went on a roll. With six service points she brought her team to a 22-20 lead. The Wolves dug deep and, with clutch serving from Levezow and Krista Braun, they were able to finish the set 26-24.

In set five the momentum all seemed to be in Weyauwega-Fremont's favor. Though the Wolves were able to tie the score at eight, the Indians started to pull away late in the set. The match ended 15-11 in Weyauwega-Fremont's favor.

With 12 points, four of which were solo blocks, Kali Draeger was the Wolves' point leader. Megan O'Brien had 6 points while Braun and Aimee Drath each contributed 5. Other team members who scored points included: Ansley Block (2.5), Kim Retzke (1.5), and Torrie Dean (1). Braun also had 17 assists for the night. Wendy Kons was the team's dig leader with 23 while O'Brien had 15 and Drath had 14. Missed serves certainly worked against the Wolves in this match and Paige Schernecker, serving 1-1, was the only team member to be 100% from the line.

Manawa 3

Marion 1

On Thursday, Oct. 6, the Lady Wolves honored their Senior players with gifts and personal recognition. This year's seniors include: Jessica Smiles, Krista Braun, Danielle Ferg, Aimee Drath, Taylor Remington, Kali Draeger, Kim Retzke, and Olivia Levezow. The night also included a win against the Mustangs of Marion.

In the first set the Wolves setters, Braun and Ferg, served a combined 11 of Manawa's 25 points. With good consistent play by all of the Wolves hitters and great defense by the back row specialists it was an awesome team win, 25-21.

Ferg was the first server in the second set. She served 6 in a row to give the Wolves a 6 to 2 lead which they just continued to build upon. Manawa showed the true meaning of momentum and won the 2nd set 25-13.

In the third set the Wolves struggled to keep themselves energized. Paige Schernecker tried to help her team out by serving 6 in a row to put the Wolves up 11 to 8 but their lead was soon lost. Once Marion took control of the game Manawa was never able to regain the lead. The Mustangs won, 25-18.

The Wolves were determined to finish the match in 4 sets, and they did, though Marion put up a good fight. Pressure serving by Retzke helped the Wolves get their much needed 24th point with Marion at 21. On their side out Marion was able to bring the score within one but, with a very good head's up play by O'Brien, the Wolves finished the match 25-23.

Setters, Ferg and Braun, both did an amazing job putting the ball up for their hitters. Ferg had 14 assists for the night while Braun had 9. Draeger had 10 points and was followed closely behind by the team's other middle hitter, Ansley Block. Other team members who contributed points included: Levezow (7), Schernecker (5), Remington (4), Braun (3), Ferg (2), Drath (2), and Retzke (1). The Wolves served very well for the night. As a team they were 96.8% from the line and had 7 players who served 100%. Ferg had an amazing night from the service line. She was 26 for 26. Schernecker (14-14), Dean (11-11), Remington (9-9), Braun (6-6), Retzke (4-4) and O'Brien (3-3) also served 100%. Levezow was the defensive leader with 31 digs while Remington had 19.
