Lakemen to hold bowling tourney, banquet

Nov. 2, 2011 | 0 comments

The Waupaca Lakemen have set the dates for their annual winter events, a bowling tournament and banquet.

The bowling tourney, hosted by Dean and Kim Nelson of Nelsons' Strike Zone in Waupaca, is scheduled for Saturday Dec. 10. Entry forms are currently available at Nelsons' Strike Zone.

Slots fill up fast every year for the 16th annual event, a five-person, nine-pin handicapped tourney. There will be two shifts (12:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m.). There is a $20 per person entry fee, with an optional singles event as well.

First-place team payout is $300, based on full shifts. Besides the bowling, there will also be an ongoing raffle throughout the afternoon with prizes donated by many area businesses. Participants do not have to be a regular league bowler to participate. The event is the only offseason fundraiser the Lakemen have.

Contact Dean Nelson for more information.

The winter banquet has been an annual event for over 50 years and is a chance for the team, volunteer workers and fans to get together for an evening of socializing, with the focus on the past season.

The banquet has recently been held the first Saturday after New Years Day, which means the event will be held Saturday, Jan. 7, at Simpson's Restaurant in Waupaca.

A cocktail hour will begin at 6 p.m., followed by a family-style dinner at 7 p.m. and a short program. Attendees need to make reservations so adequate preparation can be made. Reservations should be made with Dave Peterson, Josh Peterson or Lee Thompson sometime between Thanksgiving and Christmas.

The cost of the meal will be collected that evening. There is plenty of time, but those who anticipate attending should save the date on their calendar.

"With 2011 being another Grand Championship year, there is lots to celebrate and reflect back on," team manager Dave Peterson said. "Rick Riddle has again put together the stats from last season and incorporated them into the all-time record books. There will some of those available at the banquet free of charge. Because detailed Lakemen records were kept only from 1970 on, all-time is a bit misleading. That does involve over 40 years of baseball, yet does not include the many who played before that decade."

The pitching staff in 2011 did most of the record setting. They combined to set a team-record low ERA of 1.74 over the 33-game schedule that includes all nonconference, league and playoff games. The previous best was in 1972 (2.18).

Individually, Zac Peterson had a perfect 10-0 record. That tied him with his uncle, D.J. Peterson (1972), but only for second best all-time. The best was an 11-0 record in 1980 by John Koronkiewicz.

The 2011 team had five hitters with a .300 average for the year (more than 20 at-bats required): Casey McDaniel (.381), Rocky Mondello (353), Nate Nelson (.333), Luke Behm (.329) and Andy Wanty (.323).

The team finished with a .264 cumulative average, while opponents finished at .201. The Lakemen outscored the opposition 185-77 over the 33 games.

"The banquet gives everyone the opportunity to remember not just statistics, but all of the other excitement that takes place each summer at Lakemen Field," Peterson said.
