T-Bird girls top Chiefs
Wins have been few and far between this season for the Iola-Scandinavia girls' basketball team.
However, the Thunderbirds picked up their biggest of the season and nearly came up with another one. I-S handed Shiocton a 52-32 loss Friday, Jan. 27, and fell to Stevens Point Pacelli 36-35 Tuesday, Jan. 24.
I-S 52, Shiocton 32
IOLA - The T-Birds held a slim 10-9 lead after one quarter, but outscored the Chiefs 42-23 the rest of the way.
I-S led 25-16 at halftime and 33-25 after three quarters before outscoring the visitors 19-7 over the final eight minutes.
Six players scored seven, eight or nine points for the T-Birds. Jane Oligney led the way with nine, while Emily Sether and Karina Welch added eight each and Kylie Johnson, Brooke Phillips and Elle Maus finished with seven.
Pacelli 36, I-S 35
STEVENS POINT - Marisa Rice's two free throws with 15 seconds remaining gave the Cardinals the one-point win.
Neither team had much success finding the basket in the first half. Pacelli led 7-6 after one quarter and 14-10 at halftime
The T-Birds, however, came back in the fourth quarter to outscore the home team 12-7. I-S went up 32-29 lead with 3:20 to go, but was outscored 7-3 the rest of the way.
I-S had chances after Rice gave the Cardinals the late lead, but Welch's jumper and Oligney's three-pointer just missed their mark.
Welch and Maus led the T-Birds with seven points each, while Rice was the only player in the game to finish in double figures with 12.
The T-Birds hosted Rosholt Tuesday, Jan. 31, for Rock the Gym and will travel to Amherst Friday, Feb. 3, for a rematch with the conference-leading Falcons.
