T-Birds win pair of one-run games
The Iola-Scandinavia softball team won a pair of one-run games this past week.
The Thunderbirds beat Wittenberg-Birnamwood 8-7 Friday, May 4, and handed Amherst a 3-2 defeat Tuesday, May 1.
The team has a 5-4 Central Wisconsin 8 Conference record and is 10-6 overall.

WITTENBERG - The Thunderbirds returned home with the win despite committing seven errors and giving up a grand slam home run.
After the Chargers tied the game 7-7 on Brittany Zblewski's grand slam in the fifth inning, the T-Birds scored a run in the top of the seventh and held the Chargers scoreless in the bottom of the inning.
Payton Erickson went the distance to earn the win. She allowed six hits and one walk while striking out one batter.
Kylie Johnson, Brooke Phillips and Jane Oligney each had two hits, including a double. Elle Maus drove in pair of runs, while Johnson, Phillips and Karina Welch drove in a run each.
I-S 3, Amherst 2
IOLA - Johnson and Phillips each hit solo home runs in the fifth and sixth inning, respectively. The Falcons had the bases loaded in the seventh inning, but couldn't come up with the tying run.
Erickson went the distance in a pitcher's duel to earn the victory. She allowed 12 hits and three walks while striking out four batters. The T-Birds also played one of their better defensive games, committing only one error.
After Amherst took a 1-0 lead on Jess Torrey's solo home run in the second inning, I-S tied the game in the fourth inning. Phillips doubled to left field and later scored on Oligney's double.
Junior varsity
The junior varsity team won three games this past week and improved to 12-2 on the season.
The T-Birds beat Bonduel 8-1 Monday, April 30, and took two games against Plainfield Tri-County, 16-0 and 29-2, Tuesday, May 1.

IOLA - I-S scored four runs in the second inning and added three more in the fifth and one in the sixth.
Pitcher Brianne Huettner allowed three hits and one walk while striking out 10 batters.
Sophie Erdmann had two hits, while Huettner and Kjersti Aasen each had a double. Aasen and Mariah Oppor each drove in two runs.

PLAINFIELD - The first game was stopped after three innings and the second game ended after the fifth inning due to the 10-run rule.
Huettner went the distance to earn the win. Huettner allowed no hits and one walk while striking out seven batters. In the second game, Oppor allowed three hits and two walks while striking out seven batters.
Huettner had five hits in the doubleheader, including two home runs, two triples and a double. Oppor also had five hits, including a triple and a double. Lindsey Bloom had four hits, while Aasen, Denisha Erno, Holly Boyle, Emily Bonikowske and Emily Ambrosius each had two hits. Ambrosius had two triples.
The varsity team will play their next two games on the road, including today (Thursday, May 10) at Manawa and Monday, May 14, at Amherst before hosting Rosholt in a rescheduled nonconference game Tuesday, May 15. The T-Birds will play their final conference and regular season at home against Shiocton Thursday, May 17. All games are set to start at 4:30 p.m.
The JV team will host Wittenberg-Birnamwood today before playing a three-game tournament at Shiocton Saturday, May 12. The T-Birds will play Shiocton at 9 a.m., Wittenberg-Birnamwood at 10:45 a.m. and Tri-County at 12:30 p.m.
