Thunderbirds, Hornets in Dig Pink matchup
Thousands of volleyball teams from around the country will participate in the Side-Out Foundation's Dig Pink National Breast Cancer Awareness Rally.
Two of them are the Iola-Scandinavia Thunderbirds and Rosholt Hornets, who will meet for a volleyball match at 6 tonight (Thursday, Oct. 13) in the Iola-Scandinavia High School gym.
Middle school, high school and college teams will promote breast health education in the research.
Dig Pink events give spectators the opportunity to become involved by making donations to the cause and by pinking out the events (i.e. donning pink to show their support). Admission is $3 for adults and $1 for students and all admissions will be donated to the cause.
The T-Birds would like to fill the gym with pink, so fans are encouraged to wear their best pink costume and have a the chance to win a prize.
Raffles, bake and pink ribbon sales, a serving contest, a bean bag toss and T-shirt tosses are planned before, during and after the volleyball match.
Raffle ticket sales will begin at 4:45 p.m. and tickets will be sold through the second game of the varsity match.
The team is selling pink paper ribbons for $1 that includes a chance to win a "pink" digital camera or a 20-inch flat-screen TV. Other raffle prizes include Green Bay Packers jerseys, autographed "pink" cleats worn by Iola's Austen Lane during the 2010 NFL season, gift certificates from area businesses and more.
Proceeds from all donations will benefit the Side-Out Foundation, a national nonprofit organization based in Washington, D.C.
