Trucks drop Mustangs

Oct. 5, 2011 | 0 comments

The Clintonville Truckers football team notched another victory by defeating the Little Chute Mustangs Friday night, 14-7 and improving their record to 3-3 in conference play.

Defense was the name of the game as the Truckers held the Eastern Valley Conference's leading rusher, Tanner Keyzers, to 50 yards. However, the mistake bug plagued Clintonville early.

On Little Chute's first punt of the game, the ball bounced off of a Trucker player and was recovered by the Mustangs. The defense did its job and forced a four-and-out on the Mustangs.

Clintonville's offense began to move the ball behind the hard running of Jake Reiter and also receptions on third and long and a fourth and five from quarterback Ben Klein to receiver Garrick Morgan. Then on fourth down and five again, Klein connected with receiver James Simpson for a 27-yard touchdown catch. The kick by Reiter put the Truckers on top 7-0.

On Little Chute's next possession, the Truckers had the Mustangs backed up with a third and twenty. However, the Trucker defense allowed a halfback option pass get by them giving Little Chute a first down. Then on fourth and long, a Trucker defender slipped on a pass play giving the Mustangs first down on the one yard line. Mustang quarterback Mitch Ciske ran the ball in from the one. Turner Botz's kick was good making the score 7-7.

Even though the Truckers struggled, they pressed on and good things happened for them. With 55 seconds remaining in the first half, the Mustangs were pushed back and Trucker linebacker Brandon Dilge dropped the quarterback for a loss on fourth and one giving the Truckers the ball on the Mustang 31 yard line. A pass to A.J. Russell, a quarterback scramble by Klein, and runs of 17, 5, and 4 yards by Jake Reiter resulted in a Clintonville touchdown. The kick by Reiter made it 14-7 at halftime.

In the third quarter the Truckers were on the move when a tipped pass was intercepted by the Mustangs. Clintonville's Jake Reiter, Ben Klein, and finally Marcus Engel brought the Mustang player down on the Clintonville one yard line. The Trucker defense took on the challenge and kept the Mustangs from scoring. On fourth and six, Kolin Kubitz tipped a Little Chute pass which was intercepted in the end zone by Garrick Morgan, giving the Truckers the ball on the 20 yard line.

Outstanding punting by John Schultz kept the Mustangs at bay as the Trucker offense could not secure enough first downs to keep the ball moving down the field. With 2:46 left in the game, Schultz punted the ball down to the Mustang 28 yard line where Little Chute fumbled the ball and Clintonville's Brandon Dilge secured possession of the ball. The Truckers then ran out the clock for their third victory of the season.

"It definitely was a defensive battle tonight. Our defense is number one in the conference in points given up. It showed why tonight as we also shut down the top rusher in the conference. We had some big plays by several different people tonight. We overcame some mistakes that we made and never gave up. We're improving and looking forward to our game against Xavier for homecoming," commented coach Bob Petermann.

Clintonville's next game is Homecoming on Friday, October 7, vs. Xavier at 7 p.m.
