Waupaca boys get first conference win
Not only did the Waupaca Comet boys' basketball team pick up its first Eastern Valley Conference win, but it also had three players in double figures for the first time this season.
Brando Vasquez, Nate Jenson and Kevin Moe scored 14, 13 and 11 points, respectively, Thursday, Jan. 5, in a 50-44 win at Ripon.
Waupaca trailed 11-8 after one quarter and 22-20 at halftime, but outscored the Tigers 14-7 in the third quarter and 16-15 over the final eight minutes.
"What a morale booster," coach Ron Weber said. "The boys really executed our game plan well. We mixed in a few defenses that confused them early and we had some real nice ball movement."
The Comets also hit 16 of 38 shots, while Ripon was 16-of-48. Jenson also pulled down 13 of Waupaca's 24 rebounds.
"There's no substitute for making shots," Weber said. "When you're making shots, your energy is much higher. I thought we had great energy."
The Comets also held Ripon's leading scorer, Bryce Bauman, to two points and turned the ball only four times in the second half.
"Four turnovers in the second half is a big reason we won this game," Weber said.
Waupaca improved to 1-5 in EVC play and 2-8 overall and hosted Clintonville Tuesday, Jan. 10. The Comets will also head to Freedom Monday, Jan. 16, for a conference matchup with the Irish.
