W-F girls win Marathon tournament
Not many basketball teams can win a two-game tournament by turning the ball over nearly 60 times.
The Weyauwega-Fremont girls' basketball team can, however.
The Indians turned the ball over 29 times Thursday, Dec. 29, in a 43-36 win over Marathon in the championship game of the Marathon Holiday Tournament and another 29 times the day before in a 70-30 first-round win over Athens.

The Indians trailed the host Red Raiders 9-7 heading into the second quarter, but took a 23-17 halftime lead and had a 38-30 heading into the final period.
"We won the tournament with good interior defense," coach Joe Titus said. "Despite 29 turnovers for the second straight game, the girls made shots when they needed to. It was a good win for us coming up and beating the host team in their tourney. We need to tighten up with the basketball and make better decisions with the lead."
Mariah Hulbert and Jenni Hellweg teamed up to score 31 of the Indians' 43 points, as they led the team with 16 and 15 points, respectively.
W-F 70, Athens 30
The turnover bug bit the Indians against the Bluejays, but they still managed to win by 40 points.
W-F led 15-10 after one quarter, 34-14 at halftime and 50-20 after three quarters.
"It was a pretty solid game for our girls," Titus said. "Despite committing 29 turnovers, we took advantage of a quick start and outstanding rebounding."
Ellen Schroeder came off of the bench to lead the team with 17 points and 14 rebounds, while Hulbert and Hellweg added 17 points each.
"Our length on defense frustrated Athens all day," Titus said. "I think our experience advantage helped us overcome a lot of turnovers. Ellen's tenacity on the offensive boards has been a tremendous spark for us and we have been getting consistent scoring from some kids, but it has been someone different every game making a difference."
Danielle Austreng added six steals each and Bailey Kapitzke added five.
"Right there is 17 extra possessions they didn't get," Titus said.
The Indians will host Stevens Point Pacelli Friday, Jan. 6, in a Central Wisconsin 8 Conference matchup before heading to Iola-Scandinavia Tuesday, Jan. 10, for another CWC-8 game.
