W-F seventh-graders win league

Oct. 26, 2011 | 0 comments

Weyauwega-Fremont's seventh-grade volleyball team recently wrapped up a seven-week season that included a 12-0 record in league matches and an overall mark of 17-4.

The team also competed in two tournaments, placing second out of four teams at the Wittenberg-Birnamwood Tournament in September and fourth out of 11 teams at the Little Chute Invitational in October.

Tim Potratz coached the team, which consisted of nine girls that started practice a week before school started. Team members included Sydney Faestel, Mattie Faskell, Makayla Heimbruch, Genna Knorr, Hailey Krause, Amanda Loehrke, Jenna Mathwig, Andi Ponto and Becky Schroeder.

"This was the first time any of these girls had played on an organized volleyball team with competitive games," Potratz said. "Our focus at the seventh-grade level was to learn the basic skills of volleyball: serving, bumping, setting and overhead hit/spike. The girls learned fast and applied what they learned to game situations very well.

"This team was especially good at serving, which helped them win most of our games," he said. "All the girls on the team contributed to the team success and should be proud of the efforts."
